Recap... ANNUAL COACHES DINNER Attracts Over 200 Alumni and Friends - June 2005

Avid Tiger fans socialized, dined, and listened to their favorite coach during the fourth Annual Coaches sponsored by Greater Baton Rouge LSU Alumni Chapter on June 14th. The event, held annually at the Lod Cook Alumni Center, is fast becoming a traditional way to conclude one athletic campaign and prepare for the approaching one.

Coaches, local businesses, and other Tiger faithful donated over 40 items for the silent auction that featured memorabilia from all LSU sports; framed pictures depicting battles on the hardwood, diamond, and gridiron; gift certificates to golf courses; jewelry; and other treasures.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Chapter's Scholarship Program.
Club vice-president Barry Byrd (pictured here with LSU Head Football Coach Les Miles), serving as master of ceremonies, welcomed the lively crowd.  Attendees enjoyed a delicious fried catfish dinner catered by Unique Cuisine.  Charlie Roberts also welcomed the group to the Lod Cook Alumni Center and remarked that the LSU Alumni Association is celebrating its 100th year.

Byrd introduced each head coach and gave a brief narrative of accomplishments. Men’s basketball coach John Brady, excited the fans as he discussed the nationally-ranked recruiting class bound for LSU in 2005-06.

Other coaches beaming over a strong recruiting season were softball coach Yvette Girouard, who landed the nation’s top pitcher, track coach Dennis Shaver, who boasts a bounty of quality recruits as well as top-notch returnees, and volleyball coach Fran Flory. Celebrating their teams’ successes in 2005 were women’s golf coach Karen Bahnsen, gymnastics coach D.D. Breaux, and women’s basketball assistant coach Bob Starkey.

Making first-time appearances to the Coaches event were soccer coach Brian Lee, swimming and diving coach Adam Schmitt, and baseball coach Smoke Laval, who lamented that his availability meant no Omaha. Concluding the coaches’ segment was new football coach Les Miles, who won alumni hearts with his blend of passion, energy, spirit, and determination.  .
A treat for the purple and gold fans was the wrap-up by athletic director Skip Bertman, who expertly entertained while informing about the stadium and schedule plans

Recap... LSU ALUMNI TOUR HURRICANE CENTER - May 2005

Forty-five members of the Greater Baton Rouge LSU Alumni met at the Hurricane Center in the CEBA building on LSU’s campus to learn more about current research on tropical storms.  Center Director Mark Levitan discussed the damage wrought by past storms, including Allison in 2001, which ranks among the top in rainfall amounts.  He explained the phenomena of wind currents and high pressure areas, which may have contributed to Lili’s drop from a category five to a three or below just before landfall.

Dr. Levitan addressed the concern of evacuation and resettlement, if a major storm hits the New Orleans area.  He commented that the counterflow traffic problems experienced in Hurricane Ivan are a topic for discussion; and officials are working toward solving the congestion.

Following his talk, Dr. Levitan took the group to the university’s wind tunnel, where the alumni witnessed a simulated hurricane wind blow gabled and hip roofs off houses.  Alumni, also, met LSU students competing in the bridge-building contest in June.  Their objective is to design a bridge that will withstand hurricane-force winds.  Greater Baton Rouge Alumni will contribute $250 toward the students’ travel expenses.

Following the meeting, alumni members gathered for dinner at Riverbend on Highland Road.

LSU's American Society of Civil Engineer Steel Bridge Team were practicing for their national competition in Orlando.

The Annual Coaches’ Dinner, the group’s next function, is June 14 at Lod Cook Alumni Center.  Call 819-0128 for ticket information.
